Leh @ Himalaya
| On one level, Leh is a tourist town, with all the travel agencies, souvenir shops and pizza restaurants you would expect to find in a bustling backpacker centre. On the other hand, how many other tourist towns back onto ruined palaces in the lee of the Himalaya? The sky overhead is a vivid dark blue from the altitude – a breathless 3505m above sea level – and the modern town melts into a crumbling old city of timber and mud bricks. The Indian Army maintains a large military base near the airport to patrol the borders with China and Pakistan, but their main job is repairing roads and bridges and keeping the mountain passes clear of snow. words from Lonely Planet |

Through the looking glass @ annexe
| Plane (detail), by Minstrel Kuik THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: A Malaysia - Singapore Contemporary Photography Exchange Photography Exhibition Sun 21 Mar to Sun 4 Apr [Hours: Sun to Thu: 11am to 8pm] Presented by The Annexe Gallery and 2902 Gallery Admission Free + You are cordially invited to the THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Exhibition Opening Sun 21 Mar, 3pm Admission Free Refreshments provided + "That's the effect of living backwards," the Queen said kindly: "it always makes one a little giddy at first." - Through The Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll The Annexe Gallery and 2902 Gallery is proud to present a collaborative exhibition featuring works by eight gifted photographers from Malaysia and Singapore, enabling a visual dialogue between the two countries. Particpating in this joint exhibition are photographers from Singapore – John Clang, Teo Chai Guan, Ore Hui Ying, Muhammad Nuruddin – and Malaysia – Bernice Chauly, Lim Thian Leong, Minstrel Kuik, Tan Chee Hon. Their works explore themes on displacement, memories, relationships between man and land unveiling the mental maps of individuals, the inner soul of being, and their expression through their works. Thematically, the works by Malaysians deals with the photographers' relationships to the country and the imaging/imagining of this home. Responding to representations of national aspirations and terror, they play with degrees of irony, wit and personal involvement. On the other hand, the works by Singaporeans presents distinctive and acutely clear voices on their affiliation with the land revealing detachment, exploration of identity in relation to their environment, nostalgia and memories all within a spatial context. Collectively, the single thread of commonality that these images share is that in communicating a sense of space and place, their works reveals the photographers' relationship and response to their environment. All works are for sale. Buyers interested in a preview, please contact Pang Khee Teik (+6012 305 1135 / pang@anexegallery.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
